Valley High School associate principal injured, hospitalized after trying to break up fight at school – Des Moines Register
A West Des Moines school administrator was injured and hospitalized Thursday after trying to intervene in a fight at Valley High School, officials said.
A fight between four students started around 8:10 a.m. Thursday, according to a letter sent to the school’s staff and families.
The fight was a continuation of a conflict that started late at night off school grounds earlier in the week, said Laine Mendenhall-Buck, a West Des Moines Community Schools spokeswoman.
School administrators met with one of the four students before 8 a.m. Thursday in an attempt to diffuse the situation after learning about the earlier fight, according to the letter from the school.
“Unfortunately, other students engaged in an altercation with the student shortly after the meeting,” the letter read. “Valley Associate Principal David Perrigo intervened to break up the fight and was injured as a result.”
A video of the fight taken on Snapchat shows Perrigo stepping into the middle of the fight in an attempt to separate the boys.
He’s eventually knocked to the ground where he remains on his stomach with his hands near his face until someone comes to his aid moments later.
Mendenhall-Buck said she could not detail or disclose the extent of Perrigo’s injuries, but said it is likely Perrigo will be discharged from the local hospital he was taken to for evaluation on Thursday, though she said he probably won’t return to school this week.
Three of the four students involved in the fight were taken to the office and their parents were contacted, the letter read. The fourth student left the school.
School administrators and West Des Moines police are investigating the incident, Mendenhall-Buck said.

According to school code, the students could face a punishment as severe as expulsion depending on the results of the investigation.
Valley High School is maintaining a “heightened police presence” through the end of the day Thursday, officials said.
