Ascension River District will train for an active shooter – Port Huron Times Herald
EAST CHINA TWP. — People driving by Ascension River District Hospital on Thursday afternoon are going to see more first responder activity than usual.
The hospital, at 4100 River Road, will have an active shooter drill at 3 p.m.
“We do these drills, not only at River District, but all of our hospitals to be prepared for real-life scenarios,” said Brian Taylor, Ascension Michigan media relations.
Ascension has 15 hospitals in Michigan, including River District.
The drill will be a collaboration among the hospital, St. Clair County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, local law enforcement agencies and local fire departments and EMS.
According to an Ascension news release, the scenario for Thursday’s drill involves a disgruntled former patient recently discharged from the hospital who enters the main entrance.
The former patient has a backpack and proceeds to the rear of the hospital where he unloads handguns and ammunition from his backpack, according to the release, and starts shooting.
“It’s important to be prepared for real-life situations that can come up, whether it’s an active shooter or a power outage, anything that can impact our role to serve our community,” Taylor said.
