Man drowns in ocean in Daytona Beach, officials say

A man drowned in the ocean at Daytona Beach on Friday, according to Volusia County Beach Safety and Ocean Rescue.

Capt. Tamra Malphurs said lifeguards pulled a man and woman out of the water about 4:30 p.m. near the International Speedway Approach.

The man was unresponsive. Both were taken to the hospital.

The man was pronounced dead and the woman is alive, Malphurs said. Their names were not immediately released, but they were visiting from out of the country, she said.
