ALAMOGORDO – A student who made a verbal comment perceived as a threat to start a shooting at Alamogordo High School has been taken into police custody.

On Thursday afternoon, Alamogordo Public Schools released a statement that they’d received information of a possible shooting threat at the high school around 10:28 a.m. APS officials said APS administrators and the Alamogordo Police Department immediately began an investigation.

With the Alamogordo High student being referred to the Juvenile Probation Office, it marks the fourth arrest of a New Mexico teen for making threats to a school over a two day period. The Las Cruces Sun-News reported that Las Cruces police charged 18-year-old Ernest Padilla for one count of unlawful carrying a deadly weapon on school premises.

A San Juan County teenager made a bomb threat Wednesday and a 16-year-old Belen boy threatened to carry out a school shooting Thursday, the Associated Press reported.

Alamogordo Deputy Police Chief Roger Schoolcraft said the male student made a verbal comment to another student then the conversation was passed through students via text messages before it was handed over to APS officials.

Schoolcraft said at that time, the high school’s resource officer located the student and took him into custody. At no point in time was the school put on shelter in place.

“The disciplinary issues will be taken care of through the schools and we’ll probably be referring him to the JPO (Juvenile Probation Office) for Obstruction of the Educational Process,” he said. “We want to assure the public this was a single, isolated incident that’s being handled by both the public schools and the police department. The young man is being taken care of now.”

For the time being, extra police officers are on site at Alamogordo High School as a precautionary measure. School activity will continue as normal.

According to a Ruidoso News article, a threat posted on Snapchat late Wednesday prompted Ruidoso School Superintendent George Bickert to request beefed up security from Ruidoso police at their high school and middle School Thursday and Friday.
