Widow devastated after husband shot dead outside his Upper West Side lounge

In a matter of minutes, Myriam Ramirez went from loving wife to grieving widow.

Her husband, Damian Ramirez, was shot to death early Saturday by a lone gunman shortly after saying good night to his spouse of 24 years outside his Upper West Side nightspot, Manhattan Brew & Vine, police said.

Surveillance video showed the mortally wounded 48-year-old man as he slipped and fell on the snowy sidewalk while fleeing the cold-blooded shooter. The suspect in the killing remained at large.

Ramirez, prior to opening his restaurant, worked as an adviser to two-time light-middleweight champion boxer Winky Wright and to Muhammad Ali’s fighting daughter, Laila.

Myriam, 45, recounted climbing into her car outside the popular Manhattan eatery and heading for their New Milford, N.J., house about 12:40 a.m.

Co-owner Damian stayed to close up early for the night, but never made it home.

“I was just crossing the George Washington (Bridge). . . . The cook at the lounge called me,” recalled Myriam. “He said, ‘Oh, Myriam, you’ve got to come back. Something happened to Damian.’

“I thought he was joking. He said, ‘I’m serious. We don’t know what happened. . . . He’s on the floor outside.’ ”

Cops told the wife that a man in a hoodie walked up to Ramirez, pulled a gun and fired three shots from close range.

By the time Myriam doubled back, EMTs had already transported her husband from Columbus Ave. and W. 109th St. to nearby St. Luke’s hospital.

Damian Ramirez was pronounced dead a short time later after two of the bullets tore into his torso. The nightspot remained shuttered Saturday night, the lights dark and the door locked.

After the shooting, Ramirez was rushed to St. Lukes hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There was no indication of impending doom inside the quiet bar on a snowy December evening.

“Everything was fine,” the shaken widow recalled. “There were two groups having drinks and having fun. We usually stay open later, but because of the weather and business being slow, we just closed early.”

Ramirez was the father of five, including two with his teenage sweetheart Myriam. The couple met in the same neighborhood where Ramirez opened the bar back when he was 18 and she was 15.

“Nobody knows why,” Myriam said about a possible motive. “He had a couple of people who envied him and had jealousy toward him because when he puts his mind to something, he does it.”

Neighbors and friends were reeling after the unexplained shooting.

“I’m still shocked, I don’t know what the heck happened,” said a 49-year-old man who works in the neighborhood. “He’s a good man. . . . Worked his ass off. I don’t get this.”

Myriam said her husband tried to hire local kids as employees after the bar/restaurant opened in 2015. She remembered her husband, a former boxer himself, as a fighter who tried to make life better.

“He was a good person, always helping people out,” she recalled. “Gave young people jobs to keep them off the streets.

“He was no nonsense, wouldn’t hold his tongue,” she continued. “Worked hard for everything he had since he was young. He always worked hard to get ahead.”
